Captain Margaret Sheldon became a commissioned Salvation Army officer in 1904, she was born in Millvale, Pennsylvania to English parents. Margaret volunteered to serve in France and Germany during World War I, cooking doughnuts and serving them along with other treats to the US Army soldiers. After the war, she came back to the US and served in the Honolulu, Hawaii Boy’s Home. Margaret died in Elgin, Illinois on August 2, 1963.

Made cookies, 21 hundred. Then Cadet and I went to the infirmary, and it sure was a funny place. Saw a few men but had no meeting because Miss Van Harden was entertaining Capt. Clark, Segt. Barr, and many others. Went to see the boys in the next town. A very strange Sunday.

Made 21 hundred cookies, and Cadet served at the canteen. Boss made life interesting. There was a lot of excitement. An officer killed himself. Heavy bombardment.

Busy. Made 2 thousand donuts and forty pies. All gone before seven o’clock. Many to the trenches. Miss Van Harden went to do some shopping. Lt. Grett and Segt. Barr came and had pie and a Lt. stood at the door and watched us making donuts. It was a very pretty and busy evening.
