Made donuts and finished the flour. Duff helped and it was fun. For lunch we had bought cakes, John cooked them, and they were fine. In the afternoon, it was slow but the Boch was busy and had a fine time. Segt. loaned Duff his horse. As he was leaving town, he was stopped by an M.P. and put in the guard house, and the Segt. had to walk home 12 kilos. The night was a noisy one and the guns fired all night.

Made pies and cookies and had much to do. Had some pleasant incidents. Miss Van Harden went to the General’s for dinner. The Gen. came to see us twice. Then the newspaper man came out and took pictures. Then Cadet and Miss Van Harden went to visit the Y.M. Had a pleasant and busy evening. Germans came to raid and lost one plane. The Gen. came and brought Rev. Dr. Harlet, Y.M. worker in Bure, a fine man.

Had a visitor. Gen. Dunken came while we were eating breakfast, had hot cakes. I made pies and it was a very busy day. The stories one hears about the front are most interesting. One of the men from the Intelligent Co. was killed.
Had a very quiet evening.

A good day. The sergeant came to work. He put up the field range and oh, it was just fine. We had cocoa for the men and they did enjoy it so much. One man told me of how the French take grass and wire and make a screen to keep the Germans from seeing them. A corporal was very badly hurt, and his friends are proud of him because he stayed to the last, though so badly hurt. One told that in a fierce battle and the men were falling around him, he thought of us, that we were praying for him, and he felt encouraged. The stories are terrible of how the Germans treat our men. One man had his throat cut from ear to ear. He was a brave man and would rather die than be taken prisoner. The stories of our men’s bravery are great.

Busy. Made 2 thousand donuts and forty pies. All gone before seven o’clock. Many to the trenches. Miss Van Harden went to do some shopping. Lt. Grett and Segt. Barr came and had pie and a Lt. stood at the door and watched us making donuts. It was a very pretty and busy evening.

Busy.
There was heavy firing the whole night and day, and in the evening there was a raid. The French lost. One thousand men killed, wounded .and prisoners. Fifty of our men killed and wounded. Saw the fight between four planes and the Germans came down.
Made forty pies and 2 thousand donuts. One lot of pies and donuts went to the front. Every day men come from the trenches for homemade eats, and it’s such a pleasure to be able to give it to them.

John was sick, but we got a man who cut a lot of wood. Cadet and I got the water, and I made 15 pies with the butter one of the men brought because we had no lard. Sent five to the first line trenches and one to the heavy field men. We were kept very busy all day. The Germans had a fine air raid but were beaten by the French.
